The southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Susquehanna County were closed for hours following a multiple-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of one person.

Authorities say the pile-up occurred around 7:30 a.m. Monday in Benton township at the Susquehanna-Lackawanna county line.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, a northbound 2011 Volkswagen Jetta struck the rear of a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek. Both vehicles spun off the highway into the median.

The Subaru continued into the southbound lanes of I-81, striking a 2003 Ford Escape.

Investigators say a passenger in the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the Subaru and Ford were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. The driver and a passenger in the Volkswagen sustained minor injuries but were not transported to a hospital.

Police are investigating the crash. The names of those involved were not immediately released.
