Old Binghamton Ansco Camera Plant Springs Back to Life

People now are living in a building on Binghamton's West Side where cigars and cameras had been manufactured decades ago.

The former Ansco Camera Factory on Emma Street was acquired by Syracuse-based Paulus Development just over a year ago. Broome County had foreclosed on the property for taxes.

The new Ansco Lofts complex has about 100 residential units along with 35,000 square feet of commercial space.

Developer Matthew Paulus said the project was designed to preserve some of the old factory's distinctive features, including a massive water tank on the roof. That fixture is visible to motorists traveling along Route 17.

A few residents who moved into their lofts in recent weeks told a reporter that they are happy with the building and its features.

Two who recently began working for United Health Services came to the Binghamton area from Maryland and Georgia. They indicated they are pleased with the quality of life offered in the Southern Tier.
