Mall Makeover: Work Underway Inside Old Macy’s and Near Entrance
The reinvention of the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City has entered a new phase with the start of new construction work near a key entrance and at a former department store site.
Excavation operations are underway on the east side of the property along Reynolds Road.
Large dump trucks are bringing dirt to the site as heavy equipment from Gorick Construction is being used to move the material.
Johnson City Mayor Martin Meaney said he pays attention to the ongoing construction at the site as he drives past the property on a regular basis.
Demolition work has been going on inside what had been a Macy's store on the south end of the mall.
Meaney said he didn't know what will be located in that section of what will be known as Oakdale Commons.
A few restaurants are expected to be situated off Harry L Drive.
Spark JC LLC acquired the old mall complex in January. The joint venture of the Matthews and Newman families paid $7.5 million for the property. The owners have not announced new tenants for the Oakdale Commons.
