Summer Day Trip – Free New York State Canal System Excursions
A couple of years ago, my wife and I broke away from our usual vacation plan of spending the entire week at camp (which is not a bad thing) and taking a couple of day trips.
We took a look at some things to do in New York State, and of course, there's a lot to do and see just in the Southern Tier, Central and Western parts of the state. We noticed there are boat excursions at various points on the Erie Canal. I couldn't even remember when I'd seen any portion of the Erie Canal in person, so this trip and a boat ride would be the perfect way to check out a portion of the canal.
We traveled to Herkimer where an Eric Canal cruise is offered, and it was a fun and educational trip. We learned a lot about the history of the Eric Canal that we didn't know. A return trip is definitely in our future day trip plans.
And according to the website On The Canals, the New York Power Authority and New York State Canal Corporation, are offering several free excursions across the Erie Canal Corridor. Some of those free excursions include painting alongside the canal, historical boat tours in various New York towns, paddling, boat tours, cycling tours, and kayaking tours.
In addition, there are workshops, children's activities, and much more. This is the third year that the New York Power Authority and New York State Canal Corporation have offered these free programs. For more information, and details on each program and to schedule your adventure, visit the On The Canals website.
