New York State Wegmans Stores Warn Of Potential Fruit Contamination

Wegmans stores in New York have issued a recall on Friday, March 18, 2022, due to possible contamination of fruit products. The precut fruit may contain bacteria that can cause death in babies and people with weakened immune systems. The products may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. According to the Centers for Disease Control,

Listeriosis can cause a variety of symptoms, depending on the person and the part of the body affected. Listeria can cause fever and diarrhea similar to other foodborne germs, but this type of Listeria infection is rarely diagnosed. People with invasive listeriosis usually report symptoms starting 1 to 4 weeks after eating food contaminated with Listeria; some people have reported symptoms starting as late as 70 days after exposure or as early as the same day of exposure.

The precut fruit includes watermelons and pineapples. If you have any of the products below, return them to a Wegmans store for a full refund.

If your product has an 8 digit code underneath the best by date as follows: 02101XXX that denotes that package is unaffected by this recall and is safe to consume.

With spring officially kicking off on Sunday, March 20, lots of people may have picked up precut fruit for salads, cocktails, or just enjoy it on its own, so it's unfortunate there's a recall.
