While the changing winter weather, including warmer than normal temperature, have again canceled the Crappie Derby ice fishing tournament in Whitney Point this year due to unsafe ice, even areas to the north are finding thin ice dangers.

The New York State Police February 9 responded to a call about two people who had fallen through the ice on Brisco Cove in Sodus Point.

Troopers, officers from the Department of Environmental Conservation and Alton Fire Department found one person in the water about 30 feet from shore clinging to the ice.  After one failed attempt by a civilian and first responders who went into the water, a rescue boat was able to pull Jason Brudz from Amherst from the freezing water.  Authorities were also able to get Brudz son, Fisher Brudz treatment.

Jason Brudz was taken to Rochester General Hospital while his son was taken to Newark Wayne Hospital.

The investigation is continuing.
