“New York” Football is at an All-Time Low
When it comes to football in the Empire State, especially here in Western New York, things have been pretty good for the last five years. But, when you take a look at the other teams that are from "New York", the picture isn't quite as pretty.
When the Buffalo Bills hired Sean McDermott to be the 19th Head Coach in franchise history on January 11, 2017, they were in the midst of a 17-year playoff drought. Ever since then, the Bills have made the playoffs in 4 of his first 5 seasons.
But, when you head south, things haven't been nearly as good for the other NFL franchises from New York. In fact, things are at a historically bad point for both teams.
The New York Giants have had three head coaches since the Bills hired McDermott. Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, and Joe Judge. The three have combined to go 22-58. The New York Jets have also employed three headmen; Todd Bowels, Adam Gase, and Robert Saleh have led Gang Green to an identical 22-58 mark. That record is one game worse than the Jacksonville Jaguars and ties the teams for the worst record in the NFL during that span. The Bills on the other hand have a solid record of 48-32.
Hard to believe that things have gotten worse since that Tweet, yet here we are.
Let's dive a little deeper. How are things on Offense? Well, here in Buffalo the Bills currently rank 5th in total yards, 11th in passing, 6th in rushing, and 3rd in points scored.
How about the Giants? Well, this past season they ranked 31st, 28th, 26th, and 31st in the same categories. The Jets aren't much better clocking in at 21st, 17th, 25th, and 25th. The futility for the Giants however stretches back through the hiring of Head Coach Joe Judge, ranking dead last in points per game, yards per game, yards per play, and red zone efficiency.
The moral of the story, the tide can turn very quickly in the NFL. Let's remember that before the Sean McDermott era began here in Buffalo, the Giants had just come off five playoff appearances in 10 years, including two Vince Lombardi Trophies from their wins in Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI over the New England Patriots. And the Jets....well, they have been the Jets ever since Broadway Joe Namath jogged off the field victorious after Super Bowl III.
Maybe things will change soon for the Giants, as they have raided the Bills front office and Coaching Staff as they start
