A year after the sudden closing of the Ground Round restaurant in Johnson City, work is underway for another eatery to occupy the space.

Mooney's Sports Bar and Grill is preparing to open its tenth restaurant at the site on Reynolds Road, just east of the Oakdale Mall.

Mooney's owner Kevin McFall said he'd been considering the location for the past four months or so.

Mooney's impressed folks in local macaroni and cheese competitions recently so McFall decided now was a good time to set up a Binghamton operation.

Mooney's has nine restaurants in central and western New York. McFall is hoping to have the Johnson City location open by December 1. He expects to hire about 40 people in time for the launch.

Some renovation work has started with the removal of the old signage and repainting of the exterior.

Last year's closing of the Ground Round Grill and Bar came as a surprise to customers and employees

The restaurant had operated at the Johnson City site for a decade.
