‘Game of Thrones’ Is 2017’s Most-Pirated Show, But ‘Rick and Morty’ Is Gaining
If Game of Thrones skipping 2018 has one advantage, it’s that next year will finally bring us a new king of TorrentFreak’s most-pirated TV. It totally won 2017, of course, but a few new additions like Rick and Morty or demotions for Arrow might make this a very different list going forward.
TorrentFreak released their annual list of the year’s most-downloaded TV series, with Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead once again occupying the top two slots. Interestingly, Game of Thrones didn’t break any “swarm record” this year, perhaps owing to the smaller season and a number of leaked episodes, though the seventh run nonetheless proved the series’ most-watched and most-pirated overall. This year also saw Rick and Morty impressively debuting at #5, while Prison Break and Sherlock also made surprise appearances:
- Game of Thrones
- The Walking Dead
- The Flash
- The Big Bang Theory
- Rick and Morty
- Prison Break
- Sherlock
- Vikings
- Suits
- Arrow
Pushed off the list this year were Lucifer, The Grand Tour and Westworld (for obvious reasons), while Arrow notably slid from the #5 slot in 2016. Worth noting – TorrentFreak again acknowledged that streaming sites and services make it difficult to gauge torrent numbers, while “various changes in the torrent index/tracker landscape” make download estimates too unreliable to list. Also, the list better reflects series airing weekly on actual television, rather than streaming platforms like Netflix or Hulu.
The top slot could be open season in 2018 if The Walking Dead’s decline continues, so might Westworld’s return win the day? Will another wait for Rick and Morty leave it noncompetitive until 2019?
