More Support for Environmental Study of Endicott Recycling Plant

New York Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo is calling for more scrutiny of plans to set up a lithium-ion battery recycling facility in an Endicott residential neighborhood.

Lupardo Tuesday called upon the state Department of Environmental Conservation to conduct a more detailed review of the project.

In a statement released by her office, Lupardo said Endicott residents and environmental groups have raised "a number of critical concerns" about the proposed plant.

SungEel MCC Americas wants to open the battery recycling operation in a Huron Campus building directly across the street from several homes on the village's North Side.

Lupardo said after consulting industry experts, she is convinced that the DEC should take a closer look at the environmental issues related to the facility "especially now that the project permit is on hold."

Environmental regulators advised the company that permit needed for the facility would have to be modified because of concerns about chemicals contained in lithium-ion batteries.
