Makeover Planned for Historic Downtown Binghamton Building
A building with a storied history in downtown Binghamton is about to get a new look.
Plans call for construction of a new first-floor facade at what originally was the First National Bank Building on the northeast corner of Court and Chenango streets.
A new promotional effort for the property is being billed as "Retail on the Roundabout."
Pyramid Brokerage Company president Maureen Wilson said the building owner, 95 Court Street LLC, has been working to obtain final approval for the proposed renovation work.
The city Commission on Architecture and Urban Design must sign off on the exterior changes because of the building's historical status.
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Wilson said the facade work also will incorporate new windows that will reach lower toward the sidewalk level. Doors also will be installed to face both Court and Chenango streets. She said the changes will allow people to reach offices on the building's upper floors without going through area on the street level.
If needed approvals come in the next month, work on the makeover could get underway in the spring.
Two attorneys recently moved their offices to the second floor of the building.
