A teacher at Maine-Endwell Senior High School has been selected Teacher of the Year by the New York State Board of Regents.

Rachel Murat will receive the award Tuesday in Albany. She was a finalist for the state honor last year.

Maine-Endwell School District superintendent Jason Van Fossen had high praise for the social studies teacher in a letter submitted with her nomination for the recognition.

Van Fossen wrote that Murat "embodies the characteristics of an exceptional education leader - both in and outside the classroom."

The superintendent said Murat "has made it her mission to inspire and change lives of students in profound ways."

Van Fossen said Murat, who has been teaching for more than two decades, has been a "leader both in embracing the use of technology and the need to educate our students in the responsible use of it."
