Johnson City, NY Police Raise Awareness About Human Trafficking & Exploitation

Have you ever heard of the Red Sand Project? I had not. Until today. I first learned about it from the Johnson City Police Department Facebook page. It brings awareness to the worldwide problem of human trafficking and exploitation.

And our own local community is not immune to that horrible fact as our sister station, WHWK reported on a few years ago.

Tuesday, January 25th, the Johnson City, NY Police Department participated in the Red Sand Project. They poured red sand into the sidewalk cracks in front of the JCPD building.

I wanted to learn more about the Red Sand Project, so I visited their website which states:

"Red Sand Project is a participatory artwork created by Molly Gochman that uses sidewalk interventions and earthwork installations to create opportunities for people to question, connect and take action against vulnerabilities that can lead to human trafficking and exploitation."- Red Sand Project

The website shows you how to participate as well as explore. On the participation side, it states that over 40 million people worldwide are in modern-day slavery. The Red Sand Project is a way for people to come together and raise awareness about human trafficking and exploitation.

The Red Sand Project participation has 4 simple steps to follow. They will send you packets of red sand and informational materials. You only pay for shipping.
