According to a State Police news release, lifeguards were performing cardio pulmonary resuscitation, which Troopers stepped in to assist in with CPR using a Bag Valve Mask (BVM) to help with providing ventilation.

Rescuers from the Endwell Fire Department used an automatic external defibrillator (AED) and paramedics and member of the Union Volunteer Emergency Squad used a “Lucas Device” that provided automatic chest compressions to establish breathing and a pulse.

State Police say a pulse and breathing had been established as the child was taken to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City. The boy was transferred to Upstate University Hospital where at last report he was in critical condition.

The boy had reportedly been part of a school field trip to the pool in Endwell as part of an event to celebrate the end of the school year.

There were no details available concerning the discovery of the drowning or how long the boy may have been in distress in the pool before he was discovered and pulled from the water by lifeguards.

The other students on the field trip were returned to the Middle School and the Johnson City School District informed parents of the incident that afternoon.

There are no classes today due to the Juneteenth federal holiday.
