A Vestal sandwich shop that closed suddenly more than a year ago has reopened.

Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches at 3951 Vestal Parkway East started serving customers Tuesday morning.

Owner Craig Ferris said things started off slowly because the place opened its doors with no fanfare. People now are venturing into the shop as they notice a "Now Open" banner posted outside.

Ferris said he's lived in the Binghamton area for more than a decade. He said he's held management positions at other Vestal Parkway establishments, including Applebee's, Red Lobster and Starbucks.

Ferris said 17 workers have been hired and he expects to add more employees. He said the Jimmy John's menu is similar to what had been offered when the shop had earlier operated at the site.

Ferris said he and a partner are planning to open other Jimmy John's shops in the region.

The business operated by a previous owner closed in December 2017 when it was seized by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
