New York Has a Record Breaking Year When it Comes to Tornados

It's been a historic year for tornadoes in New York.

Most Recent Tornado in New York Touched Down in Ulster County

Tropical Depression Debby made herself known across the Hudson Valley bringing heavy rains, strong winds and leaving behind damage and destruction.

Parts of the Hudson Valley were under a Tornado Watch on Friday, August 9th, 2024. While many of the areas were slammed with intense storms, only one part of the region saw an actual tornado.

According to the National Weather Service an EF-Zero Tornado touched down in New Paltz near Exit 18 on The New York State Thruway. Video showed what looks to be a funnel cloud forming near New Paltz High School. Take a look:

With Friday's tornado behind us, we're going to have to add it to this list.

Upstate, New York meteorologist Bill Kardas shared that on August 5th, 2024, New York State had just set a new record for the most tornadoes in one year with "26 confirmed touchdowns."

Kardas adds "The previous record, 25 was set in 1992."

Thanks to the EF-0 tornado that touched down in New Paltz on August 8th, 2024, the 2024 record breaking number is 27.

One would think a New York State tornado wouldn't leave much destruction. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. Several tornados that have touched down in New York State have left a hefty path of destruction and some even ended in death.
