Wegmans Closing One of Its Biggest Stores Due to Too Few Shoppers
A Wegmans store that's about the same size as the company's Johnson City location will be shutting down soon.
The Rochester-based company has announced it plans to close the 134,000-square-foot store in Natick, Massachusetts.
The Wegmans site opened five years ago in a mall east of Boston. The space previously had been occupied by a JC Penney department store. The two-story Wegmans was the first company store to be located in a major mall.
In a news release, Wegmans human resources director Brien MacKendrick said "with this non-traditional location we are unable to attract enough customers for our business model to work.”
According to the Boston Globe, before the Natick store opened, Danny Wegman said "this is going to be different from anything we've done by a long shot."
The store's closing date has not been announced. The company said 365 people work at the Natick Mall. They'll be offered jobs at other Wegmans store in the Boston area.
Wegmans operates 110 stores in several states. The store on Harry L. Drive in Johnson City opened in August 1990. The location underwent a major renovation project that included construction of a 6,500-square-foot addition to provide space for offices and employee services.
