Southern Tier Counties Add to COVID Death Tolls

Most Southern Tier Counties being tracked in regular updates since the start of the coronavirus outbreak have reported new deaths related to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past several days.

On Thursday, August 4, Broome, Chenango and Tioga each reported another death while, on Friday, August 5, Delaware County’s total number of cases since the start of the pandemic was pushed over the 9,000 mark.

Earlier in the week, Broome County had recorded an additional death on Monday, August 1. Cortland, Delaware and Tioga each added a death in the Tuesday, August 2 report while the Thursday, August 4 update again added to the death tolls in Broome, Chenango and Tioga Counties.

Broome has now lost 537 residents, Chenango 125, Cortland 127, Delaware 82 and Tioga 88.

More contagious variants, pandemic fatigue and people still resistant to getting vaccinated are all seen as contributing to more hospitalizations and deaths.

The counties regularly tracked in Twin Tiers updates are Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware and Tioga Counties in the Southern Tier and Bradford, Susquehanna and Wayne Counties in the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania.

In the Tuesday, August 2 Northern Tier of Pennsylvania update, Bradford County noted a total of 17,470 cases since the start of the pandemic in 2020 and 214 deaths.  Susquehanna County was at 8,737 cases and 116 deaths and Wayne County at 11,242 cases and 177 deaths.

Health officials encourage people to stay home if sick. If they test positive for COVID, notify their health department and follow guidelines for isolation from others. Everyone should be up to date on their vaccines and boosters to reduce the chances of serious illness.
