Ross Park Carousel Enclosure Completed
Construction of a protective structure for the restored carousel at Binghamton's Ross Park has been finished.
Work on the site of the new building for the $2.1 million project began last August.
The enclosure has been constructed on a concrete pad a short distance from the location in the park where the merry-go-round had stood since 1920.
The 60 horses and two chariots were removed from Ross Park in November 2022. They were trucked to a Connecticut company for restoration.
Mayor Jared Kraham recently said he expects work to reassemble the mechanical portion of the historic carousel to get underway soon.
After the motor and related pieces have been put together, employees from the restoration firm will travel to Binghamton to carefully place the colorful horses and chariots into position.
Matthew Ryan was mayor of Binghamton when planning for the Ross Park carousel work began in 2010.
The city needed to wait for approval of the project from the state Historic Preservation Office. That approval finally was given last spring.
Kraham hasn't announced a new target date for when the merry-go-round will spin again. But he's indicated he hopes it will be sometime this spring.
