Rick Marsi, who has been writing about nature for decades, has embarked on a new chapter after his column was killed by the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin.

"The Great Outdoors" had been a fixture in the Sunday edition of the Gannett newspaper.

Rick Marsi's final column appeared in the Press & Sun-Bulletin on August 4, 2024.

Marsi received an email late last month advising him that his column would no longer appear in the Press & Sun-Bulletin. Two other locally-written columns also were canceled in a cost-cutting move by the paper.

While the move to drop the column came suddenly, Marsi acknowledged "I'd been waiting for that pink slip for quite a long time given the state of local newspapers, so it wasn't a total shock."

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program on Tuesday, Marsi said "I'd like to think there's a silver lining" in what happened. He said "the idea that Gannett paid me to write a weekly column for 44 years" makes it somewhat difficult to be too upset "about the state of things and I'm moving on."

Marsi hasn't missed a beat since the column disappeared from the Sunday newspaper. He's launched a weekly report with various special features distributed by email. He said people interested in receiving the regular updates may email him at rmarsi@stny.rr.com.
