New Plan to Rehab Binghamton Building Near Downtown Rail Yard
Another proposal has been developed to turn a blighted Binghamton industrial building into a residential complex.
The $31 million project would create 50 apartments in the abandoned five-story structure at 1 North Depot Street.
Regan Development Corporation of Westchester County is working with city and Broome County officials on the plan to find a new use for the abandoned building, which is located just west of the downtown rail yard.
Property owner Josh Bishop in 2018 had announced a project to develop 55 loft apartments at the site. Plans for that residential and commercial development were scrapped.
Bishop last spring applied for assistance to clean up contamination at the site. The state has agreed to provide funding to make the property safe for residential use.
The new proposal calls for preserving the structure's facade while developing energy-efficient apartments in the building, which was constructed in 1872.
The developer will seek funding through the state's Homes and Community office.
Details of the project are expected to be presented at next Wednesday's meeting of the city planning commission.
According to a City Hall news release, construction is expected to begin by next summer.
