Owego Treadway: Police Make Final Check Before Demolition Starts
Law enforcement and town officials conducted one last sweep through the old Treadway Inn conference center in Owego prior to the arrival of a demolition crew.
State troopers and Tioga County sheriff's deputies were accompanied by medics and code enforcement officers on Tuesday morning to make certain no one remained inside.
The parking lot of the once-popular event site on Route 17C was filled with emergency vehicles for a short time as a final check was made of the site.
The closed convention center is being torn down ahead of the planned construction of an Aldi grocery store.
Although the old building was quickly searched by police, demolition crews didn't begin their work until about 3:15 p.m. The task of removing the convention center, which included a restaurant and bar, is expected to take about two weeks.
Two neighboring hotels - a Hampton Inn and a Quality Inn - will continue to operate.
Construction of the 19,631-square-foot Aldi store is expected to start shortly after the site has been cleared.
The store is being built a few yards north of the Susquehanna River. The building is to be constructed one foot above the base flood elevation for the site.
The new business, which will be directly across the street from a Grand Union store, is expected to open by the end of the year.
