Out-of-Control Minivan Crashes Through Wall of Vestal Business
A speeding vehicle careened up a roadway in Vestal and smashed into a post office van before slamming through a wall at a popular business.
The incident happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on Vestal Road between Murray Hill Road and the Vestal Parkway. The scene is just north of the Binghamton University main campus.
An eastbound minivan struck a westbound U.S. Postal Service delivery vehicle, mowed down a mailbox and crashed through a wall of White Rose Day Spa.
The driver of the minivan apparently experienced a medical problem causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
Vestal firefighters freed the minivan operator after about 15 minutes. The driver was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
About eight people were inside the business at the time of the crash. Several of them were evaluated for possible injuries.
Police said the minivan was a courtesy vehicle from Miller Motors, which is located just west of the spot where the postal vehicle was hit.
The minivan wound up completely inside the business. A fire reportedly erupted in the engine compartment of the wrecked vehicle.
NYSEG crews were dispatched to the scene to shut off electricity and gas to the building.
