Homeless Families Moved From Vestal Hotel Ahead of Demolition
Several dozen homeless people who were being housed at a Broome County hotel have been relocated before the site is cleared for a luxury apartment project.
The Quality Inn & Suites hotel at 4105 Vestal Parkway East closed on Monday. The place will be torn down for construction of a $69 million 197-room residential complex.
About 65 people were staying at the site under an emergency housing arrangement with Broome County. In recent weeks, the individuals and families who were housed at the Quality Inn were moved to other locations.
Hotel managers said they had worked to assist those who had been staying there. They told WNBF News they held an Easter party for kids and their parents last month.
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar has said he expects demolition of the existing hotel will start in less than two weeks.
Aptitude Acquisition of New Jersey is developing the five-story 257,000-square-foot complex on the four-and-a-half acre site across from the Binghamton University campus.
The luxury apartments are expected to be ready for occupancy by the end of summer 2027.
The Broome County Industrial Development Agency approved a big tax break package for the developers in March despite opposition by Vestal town officials and the Vestal School District.
