Renovated Building at Grippen Park in Endicott to Reopen Soon
The recently reopened multipurpose building at Broome County's Grippen Community Park has been temporarily closed.
The Endicott complex featuring five pickleball courts opened in late June after it was renovated as part of a $4.3 million park improvement project.
The building originally housed a large ice rink when the park opened in 1972. But the ice-making equipment was removed after the site was wrecked by flooding from the nearby Susquehanna River.
Pickleball enthusiasts were able to use the new court for about two weeks before the facility was closed during the Dick's Sporting Goods Open.
The building reopened after the golf tournament but it's been closed again. Signs indicate it has been closed since July 21 "for a Broome County parks event." It is expected to again be available for pickleball players next week.
The old sign at the park entrance has been removed and a new sign has been erected.
A scoreboard has been installed at the newly-constructed wiffle ball facility designating the venue as "Johnson Stadium."
Construction on a trail extension project linking Grippen Park with the nearby Roundtop Park is continuing. That work is expected to be completed this fall.
