A broken sanitary sewer line that resulted in a discharge into a town of Union creek was linked to a recently-installed utility pole.

Workers at a town building on Wayne Street spotted discolored water in Brixius Creek in Endwell on Monday.

Town public works supervisor Lou Caforio said the source of the sewage discharge could not be immediately determined.

Crews on Tuesday morning began working to pinpoint the source of the problem. They eventually determined the broken sewer main was in front of a house on Watson Boulevard near North Seward Avenue.

Caforio said the trouble appeared to have been caused by a new utility pole that was set into place about a week ago. Sewage from the damaged main apparently poured into a storm sewer line which carried the discharge to the creek about two blocks to the south.

Crews from O'Connell Electric Company worked to keep the pole in place while excavation operations were started to get access to the broken main.

Traffic along the busy section of Watson Boulevard was slowed because one lane of the street was closed for the repair project.

Caforio said people who lived in nearby homes weren't affected by the work.

The amount of sewage discharge had not been determined.
