Some people who live near a power generating facility being developed on the Huron Campus in Endicott aren't happy with the noise that's been emanating from the site.

People in a section of the village's North Side and in neighboring Endwell have been enduring a constant loud mechanical sound in recent days.

The noise is originating at the natural gas fuel cell system that's being installed on Clark Street near a NYSEG substation.

California-based Bloom Energy is the developer of the 9.36 megawatt facility just west of Hayes Avenue.

Workers began constructing the facility in a parking lot last February. It will provide more electricity to a data center operating on the Huron Campus.

Endicott fire marshal Brian Botsford, who is the village code inspector, visited the site this week. He told WNBF News that load testing is underway for the facility.

Botsford said the source of the noise is a large generator which is being used to apply a "constant load" on the system. He said the testing started last Friday and it's expected to be "a short-term thing."

Chris Pelto, who manages the Huron Campus for Phoenix Investors, could not be reached for comment Wednesday about project.

The basic construction of the generating facility was completed a few weeks ago. It's not known when it will begin producing power.

There apparently are no plans to develop similar fuel cell systems in Broome County at this time. County Executive Jason Garnar has said more on-site generation projects likely will be needed to provide electricity for new or expanding businesses.
