The increase will by one dollar per pack from $4.35 to $5.35 and one dollar per pack of 20 on little cigars. The increase is part of New York State's $229 billion budget plan that was approved last spring.

According to a release by the Tobacco Free Communities of Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie, this tax increase will make New York State one of the most expensive states to purchase cigarettes.

Young people generally don't have a lot of disposable income. By raising the price of cigarettes, it decreases the chances that they will purchase a product that will lead to a lifetime of addiction. -  Jennifer Hill, Community Engagement Coordinator, Tobacco-Free Communities of Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie.

The release notes that this increase will save 15,300 New Yorkers' lives and will prevent 14,000 youths under 18 from becoming adults who smote, according to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.

Tobacco Free Communities of Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie states some interesting facts:

  • New York State residents spend at least $4000 on cigarette purchases.
  • Almost 9 out of 10 9 out of 10 people who smoke cigarettes, began smoking at age 18.
  • Just under 70% of smokers want to quit. Price increases are a good motivator.
  • The New York State average adult smoking rate is 12%. The U.S. average is 15.5%.

Tobacco Free Communities of Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie notes that there is a free and confidential service for smokers wanting to overcome smoking (including vape products). Visit the New York State Smoker's Quitline website, call 866-NY-QUITS (866-697-8487), or text QUITNOW to 333888.
