Binghamton Drivers Facing Highest Labor Day Gas Prices Ever

Motorists in the Binghamton area may be about to pay record-high prices for gasoline this Labor Day.

GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan the average local price for regular gas at this time last year was $3.14 a gallon. That compares to about $4.08 a gallon now.

De Haan told WNBF News Tuesday this likely will be "the most expensive Labor Day that you've ever paid for (gas) in Binghamton." He said that also applies nationally.

De Haan said diesel prices are close to setting an all-time record.

Global oil prices have been volatile since the Iran war started last winter. De Haan noted the price rollercoaster was on the upswing as the week began.

He said prices have been affected by Ukraine's recent attacks that have knocked many Russian oil refineries offline.

De Haan said there have been reports that Russia now has been forced to import gasoline and jet fuel because there are not enough refineries online now.

He said refining capacity continues to be a major factor contributing to high gasoline and diesel prices in the United States and around the world.

De Haan seemed cautiously optimistic when asked to predict the average gas price in Binghamton at the end of 2026. He said: "Hopefully, below four dollars." He suggested it could range from $3.50 to $3.95 a gallon. But, he cautioned, "geopolitical tensions are the impossible thing to predict."
