Federal Agency Probing Binghamton Parking Garage Project Injury
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding an incident that resulted in a worker being hurt at a Binghamton parking garage demolition site is underway.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Syracuse office was informed of Monday's worksite incident.
A man who was involved in a project to remove the remaining structure of the Water Street parking ramp was injured when he apparently became trapped under concrete.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. Monday as demolition crews worked above the north end of the Boscov's department store on Water Street.
The man who was pinned under the concrete was reported to be in a roof area 35 feet above the street. Co-workers apparently managed to free him before firefighters got to him. He was led down the stairs and evaluated by medics on the sidewalk near the north entrance to Boscov's.
The injured worker - whose name was not released by Binghamton police - was taken to a hospital for what appeared to be a leg injury.
An OSHA spokesperson told WNBF News the agency began an inspection of the worksite on Tuesday.
Binghamton police investigators interviewed workers at the scene shortly after the man was hurt. The information they developed has been turned over to OSHA.
City officials last month announced work had resumed at the site of the former parking garage. Construction operations were suspended in October after the original redevelopment plan was scrapped because a tax break proposal was rejected by the Binghamton school board.
Foundation work is underway for a new $25 million city-owned parking facility.
