Endwell Man Plans Apartment Complex at Binghamton Crowley Plant
The abandoned Crowley dairy processing facility on Binghamton's South Side may be converted into a residential development.
Jon Korchynsky of Endwell is preparing to buy the old plant on Conklin Avenue from Mountain Fresh Dairy.
Korchynsky said he first walked through the former Crowley facility in early October. He said he believes what had been an "iconic factory" can be converted into apartments.
Korchynsky said the property has been under contract to Crowley Factory Lofts LLC for a couple of months. He expects to close on the deal within the next few weeks.
The $13 million project calls for the creation of 45 market-rate residential units on the second and third floors of the 73,000-square-foot brick building. Korchynsky plans to renovate about 50,000 square feet of the structure.
Mountain Fresh Dairy acquired the former Crowley properties in 2013 for $150,000. The company processed some milk at the plant for a short time before ending operations.
Korchynsky said the old industrial building has "got great bones." He said the first floor won't be used for housing because of potential flooding concerns from the Susquehanna River, which flows just north of the site. He said the ground level likely would be used for parking.
Korchynsky said the redevelopment is "going to be a massive project" which likely would take a couple of years to complete.
