DELAYED: Aldi Offers No New Target Date for Owego Store Opening
Tioga County residents are still waiting for their first Aldi grocery store to open its doors.
Aldi representatives had told town of Owego officials they expected the Route 17C location would be operational by the end of December.
But there have been delays in opening the place. Aldi did not reply to a request for a revised target date for prospective shoppers.
Town supervisor Donald Castellucci said people had anticipated the store would be able to open last month but that didn't happened.
Castellucci told WNBF News he hasn't heard an updated timetable for the launch of store operations.
Construction at the site began last summer shortly after the iconic Treadway Inn conference center was demolished.
Aldi officials had indicated the store could open five to seven months after the start of construction but the project has been plagued with a series of delays.
A person familiar with the work that remains said the store now likely will open in March.
Aldi has been preparing to open an Owego store for several years. In 2017, the company presented a plan to build a store just west of the current construction site.
The proposed store would have been located where the Scoville-Meno Auto Plaza was operating. That plan never moved forward.
Aldi now operates three stores in Broome County. They are located in Vestal, Johnson City and the town of Chenango.
