New York’s Birthstones: Which Gems Are Big Here
Birthstones aren’t just pretty rocks, they’re tied to who we are and when we were born. They carry some meaning, so if you're curious which birthstones show up the most in New York, then we have the answer.
How They Figured It Out
Some smart people combined birth records and Google searches to see which birthstones are common and which ones people are actually looking for. Turns out, what’s popular doesn’t always match tradition and New York has some surprises.
Emerald Is New York’s Top Birthstone
Nationwide, Peridot (for August) is the most common birthstone, but in New York, it’s all about Emerald, the May birthstone. We’re one of only two states where Emerald rules the roost. So May babies, you’ve got the state’s favorite gem shining just for you!
The Rarer Gems Around Here
On the other side, Amethyst (February) is the rarest birthstone in New York, with Topaz (November) coming in second. So if you’re rocking an Amethyst or Topaz (like me), you’re kind of in an exclusive club!
A Quick Look at Birthstone Popularity
Across the country, here’s the scoop on birthstones by birth month:
Peridot (August) is the most common, showing up in about 9% of births
Ruby and Sapphire follow close behind

Amethyst, thanks to February being short, is the rarest at around 7.6%
That’s why you see more Peridots and Emeralds around and fewer Amethysts.
What It Means for You
Whether you’re shopping for yourself or someone else, knowing which stones are common or rare in New York can make your gift extra special. Plus, it’s just cool to know a little bit more about what your birthstone says about you and the state you’re from.
