Born in 1944 in Lyons, New York Boeheim arrived on the Syracuse University campus in 1962, graduating with a bachelor's degree in social science. As a freshman at Syracuse, Boeheim was a walk-on with the freshmen basketball team. By senior year, Boeheim was the varsity captain.

Following graduation, Boeheim played professionally with the Scranton Miners of the Eastern Professional Basketball League before returning to Syracuse as a graduate assistant with the Syracuse Orange in 1969. Boeheim was soon promoted to a full-time assistant coach and in 1976, Boeheim was promoted to head coach.

Boeheim walked onto the campus as a student-athlete in 1962 and with the exception of the three years he left campus to play with the Scranton Miners, has spent his entire adult life with the school, so his departure is a big one.

Chancellor Kent Syverud said, "There is no doubt in my mind that without Jim Boeheim, Syracuse Basketball would not be the powerhouse program it is today."

As head coach of the Syracuse Orange, Boeheim led the team to ten Big East Conference regular season championships, five Big East tournament championships, and 34 NCAA tournament appearances.

In 2015, Boeheim announced that he would be retiring from his coaching position in 2018, but in 2017, Boeheim extended his contract with Syracuse University. Until now.

Taking over for the legendary Boeheim is associate head coach Adrian Autry, class of 1994. Autry played basketball under Boeheim and has served as his longtime assistant.

Autry played for the Syracuse Orange from 1990 to 1994 and then went on to play professional basketball professionally in "European leagues, as well as in the United States Basketball League." In 2006, Autry began his coaching career in 2006 and he "was named assistant coach at Syracuse prior to the 2011-12 season and was promoted to associate head coach in March 2017."
