Former President Jimmy Carter will be laid to rest following his passing on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. New Yorkers can join in paying homage to the 39th President of the United States by tuning in to his funeral service today, Thursday, January 9.

The funeral proceedings will commence with a national funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral. The service begins with a brief arrival ceremony at 9:30 a.m., followed by the full service at 10 a.m. President Carter will then be transported to Plains, Georgia, for a private funeral service at 3:45 p.m., followed by a private interment at 5:20 p.m.  All funeral events will take place in Eastern Standard Time. 

Casket Departure and Washington National Cathedral Service

At 9 a.m. EST, Carter's casket will depart from the U.S. Capitol, proceeding to the Washington National Cathedral. The funeral motorcade is expected to arrive at the cathedral by 9:30 a.m.

The Washington funeral service will commence at 10 a.m., featuring speakers such as Steve Ford, reading remarks written by his father, former President Gerald Ford, and former Carter adviser Stu Eizenstat, followed by President Joe Biden.

Departure and Arrival at Joint Base Andrews

After the service, at 11:15 a.m., Carter's remains and his family will depart the cathedral for Joint Base Andrews, where they will board Special Air Mission 39, the plane that serves as Air Force One when the sitting president is on board.

The arrival at Lawson Army Airfield at Fort Moore, Georgia is expected at 2 p.m., followed by a transfer of Carter's remains with ceremony to the hearse and travel to Plains by motorcade.

Funeral Service at Maranatha Baptist Church and Private Interment

The motorcade will arrive at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains at 3:30 p.m., with an invitation-only funeral at the church beginning at 3:45 p.m. Subsequently, at 4:45 p.m., a motorcade will take participants from the church to the Carter residence, where a U.S. Navy missing man formation will conduct a flyover at 5:20 p.m., honoring Carter’s naval service and time as commander in chief, followed by a private graveside ceremony and interment.

Television Broadcast

New Yorkers wishing to watch the funeral on TV can tune in to "TODAY" and NBC News. Savannah Guthrie and Lester Holt will lead NBC News’ coverage, with "TODAY" starting coverage at 9 a.m. ET. The funeral will also be broadcast on local NBC channels, providing an accessible option for those without cable.
