Over 70 Animals Rescued From Deplorable Upstate NY Home

Devastating conditions at a Chenango County home have left several agencies working together to care for more than 70 rescued animals.

According to WKTV, the dogs were discovered by New York State Police while they were investigating another matter at a home on County Road 29 in Chenango County on Friday, April 28.

The dogs were found in unsanitary conditions and the Chenango County Codes Department deemed that the house is unhabitable. Animal shelters were contacted to remove the 61 dogs, three cats, and eleven birds from the home.

The animals were voluntarily surrendered by the owners but it is not clear whether or not the owners will face any charges.

The animals are under the care of the Chenango County SPCA, the Delaware County Humane Society, Cortland SPCA, the Herkimer County Humane Society, the Schoharie County Humane Society, and the Susquehanna SPCA.

Each animal is currently receiving much-needed care from a veterinarian and then the organizations will prepare the animals for adoption. The Susquehanna SPCA wrote on social media that it hopes all of the rescued animals will be "available for foster homes or adopters very soon."

Stacie Haynes, executive director of the Susquehanna County SPCA told WKTV, “It does seem like some of them have some pretty serious medical conditions, so our medical team will get their hands on them.”

A law passed in New York in May of 2022 gives all shelters a set of standards they must follow in order to make sure that all abandoned and surrendered animals are given quality housing, veterinary care, and nourishment at each shelter that operates in New York state.
