How many times have you heard that New Yorkers are rude? I have many times in my lifetime. Mostly when I'm in another state and the subject of New York State comes up in conversation whether I like it or not.

One time, while camping at the base of the Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia, a local noticed my license plates and asked me about the Brooklyn Bridge. I kindly had to explain that I live nowhere near New York City and that there really is a lot of space between Buffalo and the Big Apple. In a straight line, it comes close to 400 miles.

Had I acted like we are perceived and how I felt at the time of the conversation, well that would have cemented his opinion of New Yorkers being rude. And maybe we are. Or is it just the perception from residents of other U.S. counties, that New York State is nothing more than an extension of New York City? I suppose that could be one reason.

So given the perception from other parts of the country that we New Yorkers are rude, I put the question out on social media, what city, village, or town in Upstate New York has the rudest people? I mention as outside of New York City because we all know how nice people are in the Big Apple. (Joke there in case you missed it.)

Well, my question certainly hit a nerve there. I received a lot of answers, and the city with the most votes surprised me. Another surprise is that out of all the major cities in Upstate New York, no one mentioned Buffalo.

Some areas that did not make the top 10, but had been mentioned, include Homer, Watertown, Norwich, Ninevah (that one puzzled me), Utica, Greene, Endicott, Cicero, and even some mentioned counties such as Broome, Tompkins, and Sullivan in the summertime.

Here are the top 10 cities with the rudest people according to the answers I received. Do you agree?
