When Will the Sun Set Before 8 PM in Binghamton?
As weird as it may sound, I remember being excited about something on December 21st, 2022. And no, it wasn't about Christmas arriving four days later.
It was because the six-month cycle of days getting shorter had come to an end. Sure, even though winter had just begun, the thought of added daylight each day forward, albeit just a few minutes each day, made me happy. Darkness by 5 p.m. each day is depressing.
Summertime is my favorite time of the year, and in the months of May, June, and July, having that extra daylight on both ends of the day is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Summer is not over until I say it is...or until we reach September 23rd.
As you know, the cycle of longer daylight hours ended on June 21st with the beginning of summer. That was a month and a half ago, and with each passing day, we have been losing daylight hours.
As the summer days go by, we hardly notice the change, but eventually, it hits us late in August that not only is summer getting close to the expiration date, but daylight hours have really shortened since June and July,
Soon, the sun will set in the Binghamton area (and beyond) before 8 p.m. And exactly when will that happen? Well, on August 18th, the sun will set at 8 p.m. On August 18th, the sun will rise at 6:15 a.m. and set at 7:58 p.m.
What a comparison between the first day of winter when sunrise is at 7:28 a.m. and sunset is at 4:34 p.m. And the first day of summer when the sunrise occurs at 5:27 a.m. and sunset is at 8:43 p.m.
Well, for now, let's savor every warm, summer, mostly lit day. Soon it will be just a memory.
