Winter Apparently The Best Time To Spot Bald Eagles In NY

When I think of an eagle, I think of the Bald Eagle. Bald Eagles are found throughout New York State, including the Southern Tier as well. I'm sure you have seen them in our area.

My wife seems to spot them all the time when we are driving around the Southern Tier and points them out, but of course, I have to keep my eyes on the road as I'm driving, not the bird (although I would have loved t see the eagle in flight.)

Did you also know that another type of eagle can be found in New York State as well? According to an article on the website DOAS.US, The Golden Eagle is also present in New York State, although they are rare and hardly ever seen.

The article notes that the population of the Golden Eagle in the eastern portion of the U.S. is only about 5000. They pretty much stay at high elevations and avoid people.

But back to the Bald Eagle, I've often wondered when is the best time to spot eagles in New York State and more specifically in the Southern Tier. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), notes that wintertime is the best time.

The New York State DEC states that Bald Eagles arrive in the month of December, and the best time to observe these magnificent creatures is in the months of January and February. Eagles are most active during the hours of 7 to 9 a.m. and again between 4 and 5 p.m.

And although it was posted several years ago, I found a Facebook post from the Broome County Parks that notes Dorchester Park is a great place to spot Bald Eagles.

And here's another trivia fact about eagles. Storyteller. Travel notes that there are four different groups of eagles in the world with a total of 68 types. That's a lot more than I was aware of.
