I love my dogs. My wife and I have three dogs, 2 Greyhounds and a Whippet who thinks he is a Greyhound. He may look like a mini version of a Greyhound, but he is much more wired than our other two dogs who are mostly couch potatoes.

While our dogs are not perfect, and why should they be, they are well behaved, and get along with people and other dogs alike. For most pet owners, I'm sure the same can be said.

But there are some who don't have control of their pets as much as they should. The blame isn't on the dog, but instead on the pet owner, for lack of training or whatever reason.

And lack of control of your dog could be bordering on breaking municipal laws. For example, did you know that in the City of Binghamton article 178-16 states that "No person shall keep or harbor a dog which by loud, frequent or habitual barking, yelping or howling shall disturb or annoy any person other than the owner thereof."

Some other things that dog owners need to be aware of in the City of Binghamton include, not allowing your dog to be at large in the city, including parks, recreation areas, and on city school premises.

Dog owners must have their pets humanely retrained by a collar and leash which should not be any longer than eight feet. The only expectation of this rule is if the dog is on the dog owner's own property or with the approval of an owner's property.

Also, if any dog is left unattended for three days or more, the City of Binghamton considers that dog abandoned, and if there is evidence that the owner or caretaker of the dog does not intend to return.
