Is Black Friday A Legal Holiday In New York State?
Most of us have this Thursday and Friday off due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, but is Black Friday really a holiday in New York State?
The answer might shock you. In fact, Black Friday is not a state holiday in New York State nor is it a Federal Holiday which means that most government offices will be open and operating including the US Postal Service.
Most employers give their staff off on Fridays after Thanksgiving to reward them with a four-day weekend, but this is not mandated by federal or New York state law.
Because Black Friday is not a federal or state holiday, banks and the New York Stock Exchange will also be open on that day.
Some states in America consider "The Day After Thanksgiving" a state holiday and give state employees the day off. This happens in states like Georgia and Minnesota.
Black Friday turned into a pseudo-holiday for many Americans because many stores would open early and offer special deals and treated that day as the first official day of the Christmas shopping season.
Many businesses would make enough profit on that day to be in the "black" when it comes to their profit margin which is a very good thing.
So if you live in New York and have Black Friday off, consider yourself lucky. Go out and enjoy the day off and get ready to head back to work on Monday after a nice long weekend.
