It was a disappointment to have to cancel any centennial celebrations for the Huntington Memorial Library Staff in Oneonta but COVID-19 was not going to stop reaching this important 100-year birthday milestone. That's why the Huntington Centennial Celebration had to be moved from last summer to this summer, specifically Saturday, August 7, outside the library in Huntington Memorial Park, near the Dietz St entrance to the park (lower park).

Everyone is invited to come and enjoy an homage to this important institution in our community that does so much more than ever before. The first 100 people that come out, starting at 4:30 pm that day will receive a free plant. Plus there will be other commemorative gifts given out like tote bags, coin purses, and Band-Aid holders. And it wouldn't be a birthday celebration without cupcakes, right? There will be a limited amount of those available so come early.

If you're interested in the history of the library, then you will learn a lot from Oneonta's Historian, Mark Simonson who will present a talk about it. The building has a VERY interesting history, trust me.

Also that day, and let's hope for good weather, the library is sponsoring the downtown "Meet Me on Main Street" event where in between the live entertainment performances, library staff will announce a bit of information about the library and decide if that statement is "fact" or "fiction".

And something else to look forward to that Huntington Memorial Library has been given the "green light" for is a redesign of Huntington Park which is adjacent to the library and extends down to both Wall St. and Dietz St., as well as Church St. The park redesign will pay homage to Henry Huntington whom the library and park are named after. Tina Winstead, the library's Executive Director, told me that the new design will include a sledding hill for kids, a labyrinth, picnic area, and natural playground. We should see phase I of the construction to begin this year.
