There's nothing quite like building something on your own. No matter what the project is, when it's done, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Everything I built when I took Woodshop in middle and high school, was a fun experience.

One of my projects was designing and building two end tables and a coffee table. Decades later, I believe they are still sitting somewhere in the basement of my brother's home. I can't believe they lasted so long.

No matter how big or small the project is, working with wood is a really satisfying challenge. And if you're looking for a challenge to take on, to celebrate spring, the City of Binghamton Parks and Recreation Department has a DIY project for you.

It's their 1st annual birdhouse building competition. There will be two competitions, one for adults 18 and over and one for kids under 18. You have until May 10th to complete and submit your entry. And yes, you can submit more than one birdhouse.

According to the City of Binghamton Parks and Recreation Facebook post, the birdhouses will be judged in several categories, including functionality for birds, creativity, durability, and aesthetics.

Prizes include up to $250 dollars and to have the winning birdhouse on display at the Sandy Beach Park off Conkin Road in Binghamton. The judging will be at Sandy Beach Park on Saturday, May 14th beginning at 12 Noon.

Once you have completed your birdhouse construction, drop off your entry or entries at the City of Binghamton Parks and Recreation Office, located in the Binghamton City Hall, 3rd floor, 38 Hawley Street, Binghamton.

Have fun, and good luck! I'm sure birds in our area will enjoy your efforts. For more information, visit the City of Binghamton Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
