Motorists are again reminded to exercise caution and be on high alert in construction zones as a passenger vehicle slammed into a construction vehicle on Interstate 88 between exits 1 & 2 July 30, closing a section of the highway for an hour-and-a-half.

New York State Police say the driver of the van was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Troopers say no one was in the construction vehicle at the time and workers had been collecting signs along the side of the road.

Numerous road work locations are slowing traffic through the area including notable tie-ups and lane closures on Interstate 81/State Route 17 at the Mount Prospect Interchange in the City of Binghamton.  While that project has been going on for several years now, motorists are encountering ever-changing daily lane closures, traffic pattern changes and reductions in speed limits.

Work is also being done on the Johnson City Traffic Circle as crews are removing curbs and pavers along the side of the roundabout from where vehicles enter the circle from Route 201 south and Riverside Drive in Westover to where cars continue off the rotary on Riverside Drive heading east into the City of Binghamton at the old Blessed Sacrament Church.  Motorists could be surprised when they suddenly encounter heavy construction machinery and lanes closed in that area.

Earlier this year, a New York State Department of Transportation worker was killed when his vehicle was hit by a tractor trailer on Route 17 near Nichols.
