Christmas cookies are always a favorite around the holidays and perhaps the most popular are cutouts. Let's be honest, there are many recipes that turn out delicious but this recipe is one my family has been keeping for years.

You'll need:

  • 3/4 cup of softened butter
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups of flour
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1 cup of butter (icing)
  • 5 cups of confection sugar
  • 2 tsp of vanilla extract (icing)
  • milk
  • preheated oven of 375 degrees

Step 1)

Mix butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and eggs together well.

Step 2)

Mix flour and baking powder together. Make sure the measurements on the baking powder are perfect -- overdue it and the cookies will be quite puffy!

Step 3)

Combine flour mix to butter mix until it reaches a consistency that is easy to form one big ball of dough.

Step 4)

Cover and chill 1-2 hours (I don't recommend chilling overnight).

Step 5)

Roll the dough out with a rolling pin on a well-floured chopping board (best to take small amounts at a time and leave rest in the fridge until you're ready to roll it out). Make sure dough is leveled out to 1/5th of an inch. Cut into shapes and place on a well-greased baking sheet, or one that is a non-stick variety.

Bake 7-8 minutes. Check on these often, it's a fine line between overbaking them and just right!

Step 6)

Cool on to rack or cookie sheet.

Step 7)

Combine the butter, sugar, and vanilla for the icing. Gradually add milk to form a perfect icing consistency. Spread onto cooled cookies and decorate as you wish!

Mmmmm, cookies.
