I know, I know. I write about hot dogs a lot. Like, a lot. The other day I wrote about the condiment you should be putting on your hot dog (hint: it's not ketchup or mustard), I've shared some of my favorite gourmet hot dog recipes and even told you the best places in the area to buy a hot dog but today, I've got a new hot dog topic and it might be one you didn't see coming but I'm sure it's something you've thought about through the years.

Have you ever noticed that hot dogs generally come in a pack of ten while hot dog buns generally come in a pack of eight? This means that if you want to have enough buns for all of your dogs, you have to buy more buns and if you're anything like me, you freeze the extras and forget that you have them until it's time to clean out the freezer and then you discover that you've got a handful of packages of hot dog buns, all of them missing two buns (and almost always freezer-burned because you forgot about them).

I can't say that I've ever been "outraged" by the random extra hot dog buns in my freezer. Frustrated that I forgot about them? You bet because it was my own fault, but never outraged. Apparently, though, people have legitimately been outraged over the fact that there are fewer hot dog buns in a package than there are hot dogs in a package and Heinz has vowed to do something about it.

Heinz has introduced the Heinz Hot Dog Pact which is a petition that calls, "on big bun and big wiener companies to finally sell buns and wieners in even packs." Daniel Gotlib, associate director of brand building and innovation for the Kraft Heinz Company said, "We've seen our fans through social media express their outrage about the bun-to-hot-dog ratio issue for years, and we know there must be a better way. We believe that the time for change is now and we are hopeful."

Here's my question though - who should be responsible for increasing or decreasing the number of its packaged product? Should hot dog companies put two fewer hot dogs in a package or should bun makers add two buns to their packages? And, how will the final result affect consumer costs? Sure, it'll probably only raise or lower prices by a few cents, but remember kids, "every penny counts."

If you'd like to sign the Heinz Hot Dog Pact Petition, you can do that here. I chuckled when I read through some of the comments from people on why they decided to sign the petition such as the one by Ed Vaughan-Huges who wrote, "We all have a responsibility to right the wrongs in the world."
