The 29th annual Southern Tier Heart Walk to benefit the American Heart Association was held today (Sunday) on campus at SUNY Broome.  According to Gina Chapman, Director of the Southern Tier Office of the American Heart Association, more than 2000 walkers participated and raised over $265,000 to fight heart disease and stroke.  Organizers had set a goal of $280,000 for the event.  Even though the walk is over the Heart Association is accepting contributions that will be credited to the walk through May 8th. Contributions may be made online at SouthernTierHeartWalk.org.

Many area businesses made contributions and organized teams to walk to fight heart disease.  A large contingent of survivors from stroke and heart disease took part as well.  Over 100 volunteers assisted with the walk.  The walk was held entirely on campus at SUNY Broome.

Registration began at 10:00 AM in the SUNY Broome Ice Center.  Numerous health agencies set up displays and exhibits inside the Ice Center.  Following the walk participants were treated to snacks and refreshments donated by area establishments.

News Radio 1290 WNBF once again was a media sponsor for the Heart Walk.  Dr. Joe Scopelliti served as the Chairman of the 2018 Heart Walk.  He is President and CEO of Guthrie Medical Group.
