HEADS UP: Save Your Samsung Cloud Files and Photos Before It’s Too Late
Samsung comes with free cloud storage on several of its devices however, that's all about to change and soon! If you've got things stored on the Samsung cloud you'll want to move them now because they're about to be deleted.
If you use a Samsung Galaxy device, you may have not paid attention (or, you saw them but forgot) to the pop-up notifications reminding you that you will need to move your images from the Samsung Cloud, You might have thought that you had plenty of time to move things but the reality is that the time is closing in and quickly.
Samsung announced that “Beginning on September 30, 2021, Gallery Sync and Drive storage for My Files will no longer be supported by Samsung Cloud and your data will be deleted." If you think you're safe because you pay for a storage subscription plan, think again. Samsung says, "If you have a premium storage subscription plan, this will automatically be canceled beginning August 1, 2021, and a refund may be issued to you."
Before you panic, the good news is that Samsung has extended the deadline to download things however, the time to do so is small. What was supposed to have started last month has been pushed back to September 30, so not a lot of time, but a little and that's better than nothing.
I've been a Samsung user for over a decade and everything is on my cloud storage. I'm sure I've gotten notifications about the Samsung Cloud shutting down, but I guess I forgot about it. Imagine the surprise I woke to this morning when there was an alert on my phone telling me that I've got until September 29 to download the 7,082 photos and videos I've got in my Samsung Cloud account. I bolted upright and my heart began to pound.
Once my head cleared and I was able to process things, I remembered that I've got backups to my cloud by way of a Google Drive account that I pay a monthly storage fee for and Amazon Photos which comes free with my Prime membership. Still, I'd like to get all of my things off the cloud and onto another device where I don't have to worry about them ever being deleted.
What you do with your photos and videos is your call, but I just ordered a big external hard drive and will be downloading everything there. Then, I can store the device in my safe, and I won't have to worry about losing any photos or videos to another cloud-providing service shutting things down.
