Another housing project is about to be developed near Binghamton University's growing Health Sciences Campus in Johnson City.

Plans call for the construction of an apartment complex on the southwest corner of Grand Avenue and Sherman Street.

Praveen Kamath, a New York City-based developer, has been working for more than two years to make the project a reality. The complex will be known as "LOFTS@JC."

County records show the property at 128 Grand Avenue was acquired in May 2017 for $350,000.

For several decades, the site was home to a series of supermarkets, including Acme and Harris food stores. The building last was used as a dollar store nearly 20 years ago.

A notice posted on the structure indicated LCP Group of Vestal was handling asbestos removal before the building is demolished.

There will be 24 apartments in the three-story building that will be constructed on the site. A groundbreaking ceremony is to be held Wednesday at 10 a.m.
