Our phones will soon be able to alert us if we come in contact with someone who has tested positive with COVID-19.

The outbreak of the coronavirus has affected all of us in one way or another and it looks like two of the biggest tech companies in the world are in the process of making it possible for us to all be notified if we come in contact with someone that has tested positive for COVID-19, according to WTEN.

The technology is being called contract-tracing and its being set up to stop the spread of the coronavirus by first letting users know if they have come in contact with someone who has the virus. Second it will alert users so that they can self quarantine themselves after they have come in contact with an infected person.

Both Apple and Google said that the service will be installed on devices by the middle of May, and that anyone that wants to be a part of this program would have to sign up on their device to share their information.

Here is how it would work, anyone who has tested positive with COVID-19 would add their data to their public health app, and other users that come in close proximity to that person will be notified that they were around someone who tested positive.

Bloomberg gave this example, "Two people meet to chat for a few minutes, and in the background via Bluetooth their smartphones exchange anonymous identifiers to register that they have been in contact. These digital keys change every 15 minutes or so and remain on these people’s devices to preserve privacy.”

Both companies did say that their systems will not say who the person is that tested positive or where you crossed paths and will most importantly protect all user’s privacy.
